Iran, Russia consult on prospects for SCO cooperation
Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei held a meeting in Moscow with Bakhtiar Hakimov, the Russian ambassador to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to discuss the prospects of cooperation between Iran and the SCO.

At a meeting on Thursday, the two sides discussed the cooperation of Iran and members of the Shanghai Organization in various fields including the fight against unilateralism and the US imposition of simultaneous sanctions against Iran, Russia and China, IRNA reported.

At the meeting, the prospects of cooperation between the two countries regarding the Russian presidency of the organization over the next year were discussed.

The two sides emphasized Iran’s more active presence in the SCO, and the Russian side expressed Russia’s position on supporting Iran’s full membership in the organization.

The SCO was formed in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to curb extremism in the region and enhance border security.

The intergovernmental organization seeks to strengthen mutual trust and good neighborly ties between the member countries, contribute to regional stability and facilitate cooperation in different sectors, including political, trade, economic and energy sectors.

Iran is currently an observer member of the SCO, though it has long sought full membership.
